Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of music programs in charter schools in New York City. While expanding on the work of Austin and Russell (2008) in previous examinations of music programs in charter schools, this study eliminates between-school policy variation in that all schools are in one urban district. In developing a picture of these charter schools and the music programs they provide their students, the study examines the status of music program availability, teachers’ credentialing and compensation, and perceptions of school leaders in these charter schools regarding the importance of music education to various charter school stakeholders.
